If you have been reading this blog for a while, you will know that one of the health ailments we are dealing with is our 2nd child’s eczema. You can read the long list of food she is allergic to at So what are we allergic to?!

We started the diet in August 2010. Things finally started to look better after 2 long torturous months but we had to take a break from the strict diet due to a pre-booked trip up to Genting with the in-laws in November. That trip unfortunately set us back a lot! 🙁 So we re-started the diet.

The whole family went on the diet except for breakfast where the others could have their fill of wheat-based pancakes and bread. And we ate in all the time. However, there started to be times where we had to go out and could not make it back home in time for our meals. So I started preparing food for her and bringing it out along with us.

The irony of it all! I, who have been so proud of the fact that we have not needed to bring out any pre-cooked food with us since the days of #1, 12 years ago, now have to! And even back then that was only for a few short months before he would just eat whatever we ate.

I then invested in a Thermos bring along container so that the food can remain hot even if we have to be out for more than 3 hours. But this is not not the focus of this post 🙂

What I want to share is how I am just so proud of how stoic she has been. Sitting through meals with us but eating her own allergy free food. This is especially tough on her since we started birthday season today and it lasts all the way to August! You can see the sadness and disappointment in her eyes but she doesn’t say a thing. It makes you want to do something for her! So we try.

Little treats that she can have that the others do not get. For example, at today’s birthday lunch, only she got a drink while the others had just iced water 🙂 And since she couldn’t eat the normal birthday cake, I baked her OrgJunkie‘s Gluten, Dairy and Egg Free Chocolate Cake. My oven isn’t working too well so it ended up more like a pudding than a cake but true to form, she said it was nice. Very rewarding to cook for this child, I must say 🙂 But I think I should be able to perfect it by the time her birthday rolls around in May! 😀

If you do have the inclination, we would be very appreciative and grateful if you could lift her up in your time of prayers. That the good Lord will heal her gut and correct any imbalances in her body so that her health can be restored.

  1. Hi Serene,

Was good seeing you, the children and Henson in CVCC today. Sorry we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye as we saw that you had your hands full with the children after service and Henson was also busy talking with the other first-time female visitor.

Thanks for sharing. I didn’t read this till I got home but I did notice Sarah having some marks on her arms when she sat in front of us in church today.

She has such a sweet spirit and sings with all of her heart, soul, mind and strength. Please convey our regards to her and tell her that I have so much to learn from her submissive and respectful demeanor.

We will be keeping her and your family in prayer.

    Blessings,
    Laura

    • Thanks Laura for your prayers. So sorry I could not speak with you at all. It is always a busy time after service. Hope to see you next week? 🙂

  2. Hi Serene,

I just came across this website that has all gluten-free recipes to be cooked in the slow-cooker. http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/

By the way, I was allergic to MSG after I delivered #3, and since becoming pregnant to #4, my allergy has disappeared!! I’m so convinced that even our hormones can affect how our body reacts to “allergens”, too. So weird – no doctor believes me, but it is true. I also only get hives (since birth of #2, but disappeared when I weaned her at 22 months) monthly for a few days, when I was pms-ing. Now that I’m pregnant again, I’ve got it all the time!

Anyway, just wanted to share that website with you. 🙂

    Blessings,
    Jolene

    • Hi Jolene. 1st of all, Congratulations! 🙂 When are you due?

Yes I am aware of this website but we can’t use almost all her recipes coz we are also allergic to mushrooms and tomatoes and dairy 🙁 And yes hormones play a huge part. Doctors don’t know squat about eczema and allergies I am afraid 🙁 They will insist it has nothing to do with diet or the gut but they don’t any ANY asnswers or solutions for us except the standard – antihistamines and steriods. And we all know that they only treat the symptoms and probably cause more damage to our bodies in the long run 🙁

  3. Dear Serene,
May I learn from you how do we “balance” the feelings of the rest of the children who do not get a treat? I think it’s a lovely solution to give Sarah a treat eg the drink at the restaurant while the rest drink iced water. How should I handle if the rest of the children ask, “Why is it that only Jie Jie could get a drink while I do not have?”

Though I only have one child now but I thought I can learn from you if God bless us with another child in the coming year(s). 😀

    • If you live in my house Poh Ling, you’d know that mama always says, “Life’s not fair so live with it!” 😀 The other children know not to ask because they can see for themselves the limited range of food dd can have versus the huge variety of foods they can 🙂 But should the 3 yr old ask, I’d tell her “That’s because dd can’t eat all the yummy food you can, so she’s a special treat.”

  4. Oic.. Thanks so much for sharing, Serene. Me lacking much wisdom and it’s always good to be able to learn from mothers who are more experienced. 😀
